In a plenary vote on February 7, 2024, the European Parliament adopted a position supporting the Environment Committee’s proposal to ban patents on all plants obtained through new genomic techniques (NGT).
However, such a patent ban would jeopardize Europe’s innovative strength and competitiveness in the field of plant biotechnology. Patents are necessary to promote investment in new technologies and to disclose knowledge.
